Krua Praya Phuket Restaurant
Krua Praya: Authentic Southern Thai & Michelin Distinction
Krua Praya Phuket is a celebrated Southern Thai restaurant, highly popular among locals and widely regarded as one of the best local Thai restaurants in Phuket for authentic Southern Thai cuisine. Awarded the prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand for four consecutive years since opening in 2018, this hidden culinary gem serves traditional regional specialties, spicy curries, and fresh local dishes at wallet-friendly prices.
Conveniently located in Soi Hua Tha, just past the San Chao Tha Ruea Chinese Shrine and 10 minutes from the Heroine’s Monument on the way to Phuket International Airport, this open-air garden restaurant offers a true off-the-beaten-path dining experience. As I arrived, the entrance welcomed me with a rustic wooden gatehouse surrounded by lush foliage and white Thai script reading ครัวพระยาภูเก็ต (Krua Praya Phuket, meaning “Praya’s Kitchen”).
Stepping through the traditional wooden doors—highlighted by red Michelin Bib Gourmand plates, a pair of traditional Thai statues set against a mirrored backdrop, and a decorative heart-shaped chair—I entered a shaded, relaxing courtyard perfect for an authentic local lunch or dinner in Phuket.
The Garden & Outdoor Setting
The restaurant’s outdoor space felt like a tranquil green oasis seamlessly integrated into nature. I loved strolling along the brick pathways and soft artificial turf, fully shaded by a thick canopy of mature trees, vibrant ferns, and tropical foliage. Rustic wooden walkways, traditional Thai statues, and woven basket lanterns hanging from tree branches add to the serene, country-style charm. The open-air dining area features wooden tables set beneath covered wooden pavilions, offering a peaceful, breezy environment where you can enjoy your meal surrounded by lush greenery and cool natural shade.
The Indoor Dining Area
Inside, I discovered an open, semi-outdoor dining zone styled with rustic terracotta-toned walls, dark tiled floors, and traditional wooden dining furniture beneath a classic ceiling fan. The dining layout is wonderfully unique, with tables thoughtfully scattered across different small elevated terraces, creating a cozy and private atmosphere for each group. Nestled inside right between the dining tables, I was delighted to find a charming pond filled with colorful goldfish. While I couldn’t photograph several cozy dining sections to respect the privacy of the seated guests, every corner of this venue exudes a relaxed, authentic local charm.
For those preferring a cooler atmosphere, I noticed the restaurant also features a comfortable air-conditioned indoor dining room, ideal for large groups or family gatherings. The space is elegantly decorated with a deep blue tone wall bearing the official Krua Praya name in classic Thai and English script, topped with carved wooden pediments and a warm chandelier. Outfitted with long solid wooden tables and comfortable seating, it offers a refined yet homey setting to enjoy a traditional Southern Thai feast out of the heat.
The Atmosphere & Staff
During my visit, I found the friendly, English-speaking staff to be extremely helpful. When I was unsure what to order, they gladly explained the ingredients and let me know whether each dish was spicy or mild, making the experience comfortable and enjoyable. It’s truly a great spot for lunch or dinner with family or friends, offering exceptional quality at fair prices.
What I Tried
As soon as I sat down and started browsing the menu at Krua Praya Phuket, I was immediately impressed by how thoughtfully designed it was. The menu features a clean, simple layout with a soft hazelnut-colored background and crisp black text, making it incredibly easy to read and choose your dishes. Having clear English descriptions, vivid photos, and transparent pricing displayed for every meal is a major plus for anyone looking to enjoy authentic Thai cuisine without any guesswork.
After looking through their recommended specialties, I decided to order two local highlights:
Hor Mok (fish curry mousse) per piece (40 Baht)
A single, savory serving of authentic Thai steamed red curry fish mousse. A fragrant custard-like texture, made with fish (pieces of dark fish skin are visible), red curry paste, coconut milk, and egg, all steamed inside a traditional banana leaf packet.
Steamed Sea Bass with Lime (fish piece – 200 Baht)
A tender piece of fresh steamed sea bass topped with fresh lime slices, sliced red chillies, and raw garlic. Placed on a banana leaf with a side of shredded cabbage salad and served with a cup of zesty, spicy Thai chili-lime seafood dipping sauce.
Practical Tips: Parking & Payment
If you are planning a visit, street parking is conveniently available right along the road in front of the restaurant. Please keep in mind that there are no ATM machines nearby, so it is recommended to prepare your payment method in advance. The restaurant accepts cash, Thai QR Code, and credit cards (note that credit card payments are subject to a 3% bank fee).
