Thai Mueang Restaurant: A Heritage Dining Experience

Thai Mueang Restaurant is a beautifully restored, white-painted century-old heritage house with elegant blue window frames, located next to the historic Chinpracha House Museum in Phuket Town. Widely recognized as one of the best restaurants in Phuket, it offers authentic and flavorful Southern Thai cuisine while seamlessly blending traditional Phuket architectural style with subtle nods to the island’s rich tin-mining history.

The restaurant is renowned among locals not only for its spicy, high-quality dishes, but also for its classic atmosphere, central air conditioning, and welcoming staff dressed in traditional attire. Whether you prefer the elegant indoors or the breezy front terrace surrounded by garden views, Thai Mueang Restaurant provides an unmissable culinary experience when visiting Phuket.

The Indoor Dining Experience

Stepping inside Thai Mueang Restaurant, we were immediately greeted by a charming, nostalgic ambience. Right at the entrance, large windows set with vibrant yellow and blue stained glass filtered the natural sunlight, casting warm reflections across the crisp white counter and exposed wooden ceiling beams, all illuminated by a classic wrought-iron chandelier.

As we walked into the main dining hall, our eyes were drawn to a magnificent crystal chandelier hanging overhead, radiating a soft, elegant glow. We really appreciated the beautiful vintage-patterned floor tiles set against sturdy dark wood tables and chairs. Along the walls, framed historical photos and a detailed mural depicting Phuket’s historic tin-mining era offered us a captivating glimpse into the island’s rich heritage.

In total, we noticed the restaurant boasts three spacious indoor dining rooms, all fully air-conditioned for a comfortable meal. Moving into the adjacent dining spaces, we found that they maintained this refined, classic feel, adorned with oil paintings of Old Phuket Town, warm wall sconces, and large windows with soft white curtains looking out onto the lush garden outside.

Throughout our meal, we also really appreciated the attentive service—the waitstaff were constantly on standby, always attentive and ready to assist us whenever we needed anything.

What We Tried at Thai Mueang Restaurant

Browsing through the menu, we were pleasantly surprised by how extensive it is. Everything is clearly written in English, Thai, and Chinese, and packed with vivid, mouth-watering photos for every dish—which made spotting the most tempting local specialties almost effortless.

Namprik Kayam Poo (220 Baht)

Namprik Kayam Poo (น้ำพริกย่างปู) is a traditional Southern Thai chili dip featuring savory shrimp paste blended with roasted aromatics, red chilies, and Thai purple shallots, generously topped with tender lumps of fresh crab meat. It is served alongside crispy fried mackerel (Pla Tu), acacia omelette (Cha-om Kai), and a colorful platter of fresh and blanched local vegetables including sliced cucumbers, yardlong beans, okra, Thai eggplants, and fresh leaves.

Kaw Yok – Braised Pork Belly (280 Baht)

A signature Hokkien-style Phuket specialty featuring melt-in-your-mouth, succulent pork belly slow-braised to tender perfection. Infused with a fragrant blend of black pepper, garlic, coriander root, and sweet soy sauce, this rich and savory classic is served in a comforting, aromatic gravy topped with fresh coriander. Paired perfectly with warm jasmine rice and a tangy side chili sauce to cut through the richness.

Pla Rad Prik – Fried Fish with Chili Sauce (250 Baht)

Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, this classic Thai fish dish is served fried golden-brown on a bed of banana leaf and generously smothered in a rich, vibrant sweet-and-spicy chili sauce. Infused with chopped garlic, fresh red chilies, and tangy tamarind notes, it hits the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and savory flavors. Garnished with fresh coriander sprigs, it pairs wonderfully with jasmine rice.
